The Great Northern Casino was the first casino to open in Minnesota’s Twin Cities Region in 1993, and in the years since, it has grown into one of the most prominent and popular casinos in the region, establishing a reputation for attracting the best and most innovative gaming machines and services from around the world.
This July, the Great Northern Casino in Winnepeg welcomed patrons back after a two-year hiatus. During that time, Great Northern had been forced to close down after a 35-year run as the city’s only casino, due to a new breed of gambling reforms that had drastically cut the number of new casinos allowed to be built in the province. “We were forced to shut down,” Great Northern Casino President and CEO David Lefebvre told the Winnipeg Free Press . “We have a couple of other properties that we want to build, and we’re working on that right now. We’re working on trying to get the regulatory approvals for those properties.”

Gambling enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the Great Northern Casino will open its doors on Thursday, June 10, 2021. The official reopening of the Great Northern Casino coincides with the second phase of the province’s economic recovery plan. Land casinos in Alberta have been closed since December 2020, with the provincial government halting all activities related to community events as a precautionary measure to stop the spread of the dangerous virus. But with the launch of the second phase of the plan, casinos, amusement arcades and restaurants will once again be able to operate at 33% of their normal capacity.
One step closer to regularity
Leanne Brownless, General Manager of Great Northern Casino, had a few words to say about the upcoming reopening of the casino. She said the team was happy to welcome visitors back and finally get back to work. Ms. Brownless stated that the casino will strictly adhere to all AHS health policies and procedures. The general manager said that not all premium casino services will be available at this time. She explained that the room will be open at that time and customers will be able to play slot machines and table games there. Brownless also said the casino will resume its normal operating schedule after Thursday’s update. Ms. Brownless stated that unfortunately, at this time, no live shows will be returning to the casino. She said he will likely return when the county enters the third phase of the reopening plan. The manager said the venue was getting a lot of requests for concert bookings and she thinks the stage will be full again very soon. The third phase of the stimulus package is not expected to begin until 70 percent of all eligible Albertans have received at least one dose of the unprecedented vaccine. Once this is done, the provincial government will relax health and safety restrictions and lift the ban on indoor public gatherings.
These are difficult times for charities and First Nations
The closure of the gambling industry was a blow to many charities in the province that normally rely on casino funding. According to the Alberta Gambling, Alcohol and Cannabis Commission, more than 1,200 charities have suffered as a result. The first nations are also affected. The Enoch Cree Nation, for example, lost nearly 26 million Canadian dollars in revenue as a result of the closure of the River Cree Casino.
Digitisation of lotteries
The Alberta Gambling, Alcohol and Cannabis Commission, which has no land-based gambling facilities, has begun an online expansion of its lottery offerings. Crown is now offering online bingo cards in the province on its PlayAlberta.ca platform.
