The New York Senate Leader today expressed support for Empire City Casino, which could help the casino’s chances of winning an approval from the state. If approved by lawmakers, Empire City would be located in Yonkers and is expected to create 5300 jobs over 10 years. This move comes as a relief but also gives hope that more casinos will get approvals across the US.

State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins has announced her decision and preferences on which of the three full-commercial casino licenses in upstate New York should be awarded. MGM Resorts International’s Empire City Casino should be awarded one of the licenses, according to the Senate leader, since it may benefit from the development into a full-fledged casino.
There is now a prohibition on commercial downstate casino licenses until 2023, although Governor Kathy Hochul has advocated speeding up the process of allocating the three licenses that are available. The New York State Gaming Commission has said that the three licenses have sparked a lot of interest, implying that the site may face stiff competition.
Supporting Her Hometown
Ms. Stewart-Cousins said at a news conference on Tuesday that she would naturally support her hometown casino, which has already shown its usefulness to the local economy. She also noted that she agrees with Gov. Hochul’s proposal to speed up the process of granting downstate casino licenses to three sites in New York City or its suburbs.
The MGM Resorts International location first opened its doors to the public in October 2006, however it is not a full-fledged casino since it only offers slots and electronic games. The casino, along with Resorts World New York City, will most certainly seek for such licenses, and the two are among the favorites since, if the expansion is secured, they will be able to rapidly flourish thanks to their existing fan bases.
Resorts World New York City, which is run by Genting Malaysia, has previously remarked that it has been tremendously lucky to have such wonderful support from local Queens neighborhoods over the last ten years. The corporation indicated that it shares the community’s enthusiasm about the possibility of expanding into a full-fledged casino and the good impact it would have on the area.
Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, Senators Joe Addabbo Jr. and Leroy Comrie, and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato are among the Queens officials who have indicated support for the property becoming a full-fledged one, according to the corporation. The Queens Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation, the Jamaica NAACP, and the United Black Men of Queens all sent letters of support.
More government officials are in favor of speeding up the process.
Previously, Gary Pretlow, the Chairman of the state’s Assembly Committee on Gaming and Wagering, said that one of his top goals is to speed up the approval of downstate casino licenses. Resorts World New York City and Empire State Casino, according to the Chairman, are the two most appropriate and probable prospects to earn two of the commercial licenses.
The New York State Gaming Commission released the findings of its Request for Information for downstate licenses at the end of last year. The RFI received more than 30 answers, according to the commission, including applications from at least eight casino operators interested in operating a casino in downstate New York.
